Berkeley, CC. 1956 Journal 21. 19. 23 Mar. Sorellen Creek, Sierra Co., Calif. J Schnell and I left Berkeley about 1800 today. At LSB just before we left, Plain Titmouse, Robin, Cliff Swallow, Osprey flew. Sun bright but going down. Moon already high, nearly full. Roads clear all the way. Arrived Sage Hen about 0030 hrs. 24 Mar. By the time we packed in had gone slow, and got to bed it was 0330. It was a beautiful walkin - bright moonlight on the snow. Low temp. f-21 F last night 24 Mar. - A beautiful morning. Mountain Chickadees and an unident woodpecker. Went to Jay: Goshawk nest. I shot at a flicker, didn't get it. Heard & saw 3 Goshawk about 11/15. The forest really is beautiful. Snow in 3-4ft deep, temperature at 0900 was 50 F. Violets are very quiet except for the wind in the trees. Only an occasional bird, no chickadees although there were some around the camp. Set some traps on way back from nest, in melted areas around trees & in meadow, some along creek. In afternoon Jay worked on his blind; I took a walk on snowshoes. Some beautiful scenery, took some pictures. Ate supper at 2000, went to bed 2100. Very tired after walking/working in the fresh air. Having wonderful time. 25 Mar. Up at 0630, temp. 35 F. Low last night 26 F Saw mouse in kitchen, set 2 traps. Saw a Goshawk chasing(?) a small bird when I got water. Bright, sunny day. Checked traps. Had 1 F Microtus near edge of creek, 1 shrew in brush pile, 13 Peromyscus along stream in meadow. Kept them well in snow.

Brake 1957 Journal 26 Jan 1957 Tree Palmas, Vallejo Valley, 400ft., San Diego Co. Calif. This area is about opposite the mouth of Cane Brake Canyon, across the valley floor, 2 miles or so, along the foot of a badlands area. The area is a line of trees, intermittent for about a mile - Mesquite mainly. There was some water today, probably none other times. Phainopepla nitens and Sicalia mexicanus were very common - large flocks of each. Saw also a few Dreosoptes montanus. Heard Geytes on the way over. Charlie saw a sage sparrow. Another bird we heard singing we couldn't see or identify. Turdus migratorius also present, not in large numbers. We shot 3 Phainopepla, 5 Sicalia, 1 Zonotrichia leucophrys, and 1 Spizella breweri (?) (Sawed head only). Walt shot a Vendocropo mecalis on the way. first seen on Ocotilla, then on Yuca. We stayed here until noon or late. On way back set 12 gopher traps at mouth of Cane Brake Canyon, on main road. In afternoon and evening until midnight, put up shuns. I did nothing but birds, and so did John. Charlie + Walt did mostly mammals, 1 bird each. We also had 2 Zimm. Zonotrichia leucophrys caught in our trap line. Got cool tonight, was fairly cool all day. 27 Jan. 1957 Eggens, Cane Brake Canyon, 1200ft., San Diego Co. Calif. Cheeked traps early this morning, had 1 Perognathus, 2 Peromyscus. Later today had another Peromyscus and a Melospiza lincolni. The bird was the first animal in the canes, along the water. The Peromyscus in the afternoon was probably missed

Baba 1957 Journal 28 Jan, 1957 Tres Palmas, Vallecitos Valley 900' Ft. San Diego Co. Calif. Spent a couple hours here trying to shoot some birds we missed the other day. Charlie got a Verdin, I shot a Matacolla (P. caerulea) which I didn't put up, and an Oregon Jumper. Western Bluebirds and Phainopeplas still present in large numbers, seemingly more Bluebirds than before. Walt saw a Cinnamon Teal. We saw about 25 Canada Geese flying over, 4 separate and 21 in a V. Saw Mockingbird, Robin, and Sage Sparrow. Charlie shot and lost an Archulus warbler. In our traps had 1 Dipodomyys. This place is also called Mesquite Oasis. Vallecitos Valley, north of Canebrake Canyon, 900', San Diego Co. Calif. Got a total of 4 Thomson's out of this area today. Set all 32 traps around here. Eggars Canebrake Canyon, 1200 Ft. San Diego Co. Calif. When we got back about noon there was a Sulphurite in the cabin. John ruined the skin. Also a Sayornis saya flying around. 2 P.M. shot a Passerilla iliaca. Too bad too make a skin. Shot Corpodanus + Amphispiza 29 Jan, 1957 It snowed during the night, and 200 ft. above us the ground was white. It did not stick but snowed very hard for a while. Charlie + I checked on traplines - neither had anything. A bit of Junco Oregonus around - probably forced down from above by cold weather. Charlie + John cleaned up while Walt & I got traps from Tres Palmas and the desert floor. Our total take over night was 1 Perognathus, at Tres Palmas. Left at 2:30 AM.

12:01 I had just turned the lights off and was about to go back to sleep when I heard someone enter the house. It was my mother. She came in, looked around, then sat down on the edge of the bed. "You're not sleeping yet?" she asked. "No," I said. "I'm just thinking about that thing we talked about last night." She nodded slowly. "Yeah. Well... you know what they say: 'If it ain't broke, don't fix it.' But sometimes things need fixing even if they aren't broken. Like your dad and his job. "Your dad," she repeated. "What do you mean?" "Well," I explained, "he's been trying to get a new job for months now. He says he doesn't have any experience in this field, so nobody wants to hire him. And every time he goes out looking for work, he comes back disappointed. "That's hard," my mother said sympathetically. "But maybe you could help him with something else while he looks for a job. Maybe tutoring kids or writing letters?" I thought about it. "Actually, yeah! I could probably do that. It wouldn't take too much time, and I'd be helping out anyway. "Good," she smiled. "Let's get started tomorrow morning." So that's how it began. My mom and I spent hours together working on projects that would eventually lead to my getting a job at the local library. And guess what? We ended up making friends with some of the other librarians too! Now, whenever I think about those early days, I smile because it reminds me of how important family support can be when facing challenges. Plus, who knew that helping someone else could turn into such a rewarding experience for myself? Anyway, enough rambling here. Back to business as usual. Hope you enjoyed reading this little story! If not, sorry about that. But hey, at least I tried my best. Sincerely, Your Friend
