Banks 1957 Melospiza melodia ? 3 April Upstream from bridge W of LSB A singing bird in Eucalyp. just S of bridge. Much apparently adequate nesting cover. But as I looked thru it I did not flush a 4 or awoke the 8 at all. No excitement like I was even getting close. Stream W of LSB, at Fish Nest 1 Found this nest at 0830, 4 eggs. It is in clumped bushes on S Fork of stream, S Bank. It's in Bulus and Dogwood + Vetch (?) Height about 34" E of University loop Between road + stream; in bushes, a sparrow acting very disturbed. Could not locate nest. Stream S of LSB Nest 2 Marked 13.0 gm Prim. 1 mm. } Unmarked 11.2 gm Prim. & mm. } These birds cling to nest very tenaciously. Eyes are slightly open. Lay quietly on balance, but try to crawl in my hand. Extra egg still in nest. Fork of stream W of LSB, Nest X This nest is empty, but otherwise undisturbed at 1825 hrs. No sign of adult birds, there was a pair of Stellar Jays in the area 4 April this morning - probably they took eggs. Stream S of LSB, Nest Z Marked 11.7 gm Prim. 13 mm } Unmarked 10.6 gm Prim. 9 mm } The unmarked bird stood in my hand and beat its wings strongly. Both crouched low in the nest as I reached in, both held on to nest with feet. Marked bird defecated while I was holding it, before weighing.
