Melospiza melodia
?
3 April
Upstream from bridge W of LSB
A singing bird in Eucalyp. just S of bridge.
Much apparently adequate nesting cover. But
as I looked thru it I did not flush a 4 or
awoke the 8 at all. No excitement like I
was even getting close.
Stream W of LSB, at Fish Nest 1
Found this nest at 0830, 4 eggs. It is in
clumped bushes on S Fork of stream, S Bank. It's
in Bulus and Dogwood + Vetch (?) Height about 34"
E of University loop
Between road + stream; in bushes, a sparrow
acting very disturbed. Could not locate
nest.
Stream S of LSB Nest 2
Marked 13.0 gm Prim. 1 mm. }
Unmarked 11.2 gm Prim. & mm. }
These birds cling to nest very tenaciously.
Eyes are slightly open. Lay quietly on
balance, but try to crawl in my hand.
Extra egg still in nest.
Fork of stream W of LSB, Nest X
This nest is empty, but otherwise undisturbed
at 1825 hrs. No sign of adult birds, there
was a pair of Stellar Jays in the area
4 April this morning - probably they took eggs.
Stream S of LSB, Nest Z
Marked 11.7 gm Prim. 13 mm }
Unmarked 10.6 gm Prim. 9 mm }
The unmarked bird stood in my hand and beat its
wings strongly. Both crouched low in the nest
as I reached in, both held on to nest with feet. Marked
bird defecated while I was holding it, before weighing.
