Banks 1956 White Crowned Sparrow 7. 9 Mar. Barncroft St along atl field, center section Two birds feeding. One flew W, towards me, the other trilled. Second bird joined first. One flew clear to W edge of strip, soon joined by other. Both fed in grass, gradually working east. After about 10 min, they were nearly in front of me. One bird flew into a bush, then about 30 yds East where he bit in grass & chipped. Immediately joined by another trilling bird. The two fed, working west slowly. The bird by me worked toward them through the shrubs. Fed in grass 10-15 feet from the pair. As I approached pair, both flew into bush, one flew to ground, then to lower bush. Other soon went to ground, first bird to ground several feet away. Single bird still feeding alone, behind me now as I so E, along Barncroft. Have heard no singing yet this morning and can only guess at sex of these birds. I judge this is a bigamist male. No action other than feeding in grass for 10+ minutes, Upper Section - flock of birds (9) feeding near corner of lawn. 12 March Center Section - 0900 Pair feeding under shrubs, 25 yds W of drive. One flew up to top of wall. There are 4 groups of low shrubs w/ red berries in this section. This is by upper (farthest E.) group. Somehowly 4 birds here, much trilling and chipping, at least 1, maybe 2, pulling at nesting material.
