Banks, B.C. 1956 Journal 25. 15 Apr Hastings Reservation Monterey W. Calif. Out of home at 0540. Saw three birds! Calif., Yew, Yellow-Billed Magpie Band, Tailed Pigeon (flock of 60-70), Brown Thrasher, Gurn, Plain Western Bluebird, House Finch, Black-headed Grosbeak, House Wren, Plain Titmouse, Bewick's Wren, Anna's Hummingbird, (three), Red-shafted Flicker, Spotted Towhee, Western Meadowlark, and Green Backed Goldfinch, Ruby Crowned Kinglet, Blue Western (Black-tailed) Thratchter, Olive Orange- crowned Warbler, Red-tailed Hawk, Song Sparrow, Pileated Warbler, Hermit Thrush, Wren-Kit, Western Flycatcher, Violet-green Swallow. Returned for breakfast about 0900. Weather was cloudy at the start, but cleared up some later. About 0900 we we joined Dr. Bill Fish , and went recording. The party included Fish, Dr. Jean Linsdale, John Davis, Dr. Miller, Bill Hamilton + 2. Fish used a Magnomite, strapped over his shoulder, with a high impedence dynamic mike in a 24 in. parabolic on a tripod, feeding in through a "pre-amp" which he built. In the afternoon I talked with Fish for a while about the equipment and he played my tapes. Later, he played the ones recorded in the morning, for Dr. Miller, Davis, + 2. Very good songs at ranges of 100-150 ft. (Blue Headed Vireo, House Finch, Purple Finch). About 1600, Hamilton Davis + I walked around some, didn't
