Melospiza melodia 34. Banks 1956 17 May N Men's Fac Club Vest W - Weighed chicks about 1715 hrs. Primaries on all but smallest are out about 3 mm; hairs just barely though. Feathers on back on all are just ready to break through. The eyeballs are shot just a mm+, but I don't think I should consider the eyes as key open; don't think they can see yet. Most of them didn't beg until I touched the nest. Occasionally one begged when my hand was above the nest. All were very active on scale, usually flopped around onto their backs. I thought one heard some very high pitched squeals but am not positive. 18 May Bear ESB Vest V Found this nest today, containing 3 eggs. It is in a briar patch, about 3 ft. high. N Men's Fac Club Vest W - Weighed the young about 1745 hrs. Their eyes are definitely open today. Primaries are out about 7 mm, but only about 1-2 mm. on the little one. They are very active on the balance and most can right themselves when placed on their back. When picked up or touched some (at least one) gave a note, quite audible, of fear. It does not resemble a feeding note, it is one short, note, not sharp, not loud, but definitely a note of fear. They grasp the nest and my fingers a little when picked up.
