Melospiza melodia 35. Barbra 1956 19 May NKE Lonee Man's Fae Club, West W Weighed these young ones again about 1800 hrs. Only one legged, the youngest. One other gaped once. The rest crunched. Once or twice one gave a note - it seems to be either a single note or an extremely rapid series, probably the first. It sounds more like a food begging note than a fear note, but the one that gave it wasn't begging. It may be a "hurt" note, and I may have been pressing its leg. Primary sheaths on the little one are out about 5 mm., on the others about 12 mm. The larger ones have their feathers almost out, on the wings, and broken through on other parts of the body. They are more active in the weighing book than the white crowns. The little one's eyes are barely open, and he keeps them closed whereas the others are kept wide open. 20 May Visited nest + weighed about 1730 hrs. Primaries still not out of sheaths, but on older birds, back + flank feathers are out. Only youngest bird (no mark) legged today. None are as active in my hand as previously. Notes given while I am at nest do not seem to alarm parents. But a great weight increase today. 21 May Weighed about 1715. No gaping, all crunched and was still. Only gave sounds once. Doesn't sound like White Crowns. Feathers well out of sheaths, esp. on back. Little one still legs. All active in hand, burrowed into each.
