Journal 36. Dec. 21, 1957. 2.8 mi. W NW Richmond, 1275 ft., Jefferson Co. Ohio Family took a ride out to road leading by West Park of Jefferson State Park. Here about 4 P.M. I shot 2 chihuacces and a downy woodpecker. (See species accounts.) They were in a general flock of chickadees, tufted titmice, and white-breasted nuthatches. Also saw one red-bellied woodpecker. All these birds were in the deciduous trees by the parking lot, at edge of open area + woods. Map: Ohio, Cordis Quad. 1:62500, 1903 Ed., (1914) USGS. 2.8 mi W NW Steubenville (Post Office), 1180 ft., Jefferson Co. Ohio about 4:30 P.M. set 25 mus. sp. net w/ peanut butter in old grown up field, with grasses, weeds and lirs. A few clover growing up. Set traps at about 5 pace intervals. Dec. 22, 1957 Checked traps at about 8 A.M. Had 2 Peromyscus leucopus. They were in weedy lirsian along the edge of field. Nothing in traps in field. Saw a rabbit. Haven't seen any birds in this field or area. Traps empty in Ptt. Dec. 23, 1957 Nothing in traps this A.M. Wandered all thru the woods, partly along (Caylento) Fort Andrean Trail, buy has it changed in the last 15 years. Shot a chickadee. Saw Pendoropes nillosus, D. pubescens, Peras canulensis, P. leucor, Certhis familiaris, Thryothorus ludovicianus, Tundrus migratorius, Accipita sp. Picked up traps in P.M. and moved them to woods. Set them in groups of 5, around fallen trees and good places for mice.
