From 0730 - 0900 looking at Zonotrichia and Melospiza. White-Crowns seem to be on territories, as do song sparrows, but most singing birds seem to be un-mated. This was a poor day to start investigating; it was foggy & wet, almost misting part of the time. Very dark, also. Singing was not in evidence as much as it has been during the week.

Here with Jay Schnell helping to map a plot of broad-leaved sycophyll forest for his work with Pitelka. The area is on S. side of road. The forest is largely Ulelhlania with Tracius and Arbutus higher up. There are a few conifers. We measured a parallelogram 435.6 x 577 ft. to get a plot of 5 acres. Began to rain in P.M. about 3:15, + we finished about 4:15, still raining. Jay put out 2 rain gauges. Put some kerosene in the jar & prevent evaporation. Used quart jars with 5 inch funnels. Didn't get a chance all day to look at birds. Mapping + plotting took about 4 hours.
