Berberis 1957 Zonotrichia leucophrys nuttallii 8. 23 March 57 Founder's Rock, Hearst + Gayley Rd., Berkeley No sign of any birds around Lee today. Barrow Lane, opp. New Admin Bldg, UC Campus. When I first arrived here at about 7:30 A.M., heard or saw no sign of birds. As I was about to leave, heard a thin lispy note - so went off a ways to watch. Soon saw one bird at just about last year's nest area at edge of wall a couple times. No notes or sounds except the lisp. One bird flew down along side of Grounds + Bldg 2 Bldg. Until present (8:00 P.M.) have heard the lispy note from that ledge (S. side bldg.). Walked thru once, all was quiet, no action or sound although hadn't seen bird leave. At about 5 of 6 a bird was seen on forepost of ledge E of Barrow Lane. I went toward ledge, and a bird (White Crown? I think) flushed from ivy along the ledge. It darted into the farthest W. tree along the bldg. I resumed my seat on Admin. Bldg. Steps. Undoubtedly there is a nest here in this very low ivy but it is very surprising I didn't find nest. After several minutes - the bird had not reappeared so I left. Greenhouse area - Nest 13 There are 3 eggs in this nest still, and incubation is under way. This must be a complete clutch. I flushed a bird from the nest. The nest is only about 5 ft. from ground, not 6 as I thought yesterday. S.E. corner University Fulton, Berkeley Saw 2 birds in this area at 8:30 A.M., over ledge somewhat S. of trees, over small, low, pine.
