Barbs 1957 M Melospiza melodia 2,5. 1 May. E Whits Frc. Club Still not many feathers out on head. Upper tail coverts + rectrices out of sheath. Tail 18:50. R-1 16.2 gm., 8+4 Prim, 18 mm. Gave several protest notes when lifted from nest. Grasped bottom front, as it did it this morning. Put off balance pan + covered in corner of box. All primary coverts (saute) out but not 8th + left 29. Head about half feathered, no stripe yet. All other tracts well feathered. 2 under tail coverts out. Tail (outer) 6 mm. Throat & flanks show dark streaking. L-1 13.7 gm., 8+4 Prim, 11 mm. A few humeral feathers out - more on left than right. Most feathers on abdomen + upper flank, but not throat, are out. Tail outer feather 1 1/2 mm. Outer secondary, right, is then sheath - only wing feather. R-1 gave the protest note + opened his gape, looking straight at me, when I lifted him from box. When I replaced L-1, he did the same - opened mouth toward me and squawked squawled. The note seems not to be one of protest, exactly - sounds a little different. Different also from begging + fright notes. May be, with the gaping, a threat display. 2 May.
