Banks B.C. 1956 California Jay Aploceoma coeruleus 20 Mar. Between LSB & Calif. Hall - Saw Cal Jay carrying nesting material N in this area. Flew into Magnolia then on into Cedrus tree, deposited material about 20 ft. up. Tree in line of flag pole + Magnolia - sort of a double tree. 14 Apr. Hastings Reservation Monterey Co, Calif. Flushed & from nest on porch of "school" at 2:00 +/- hrs. 15 Apr. This nest is about 3 ft high, cup shaped. Built of fairly heavy twigs, lined with fine material. Contained 4 eggs. 16 Apr. Found another nest on other side of bldg. Similar construction. I found it and that it to be empty. I showed Dr. Miller about 20 min. later and it had one egg with a freshly pecked hole in it. 19 Apr. U.C. Campus - Near Men's Fac. Club. - A bird twice visited the garbage cans here, gathering food from boxes containing papers and bits of vegetables. 1957 8 March, 1957 11:44 AM Outside MVZ, Berkeley Alameda Co, Calif. A bird with nesting material (dead grass?) in its mouth in Horse Chestnut tree for several minutes! Very noticeable was its "bowing" or "bowing". It would quickly lower and raise the anterior part of the body especially the head. It seemed to bend the leg at the ankle joint to do this. It flew to poplar tree, bowed some more, then flew away. Later was pounding at a branch and trying to gather a long string or wire from the horse chestnut. Possibly actively nesting
