Melospiza melodia 9 April. S. of Naval Research, Nest X 1745hrs. Left. 13.2 gm. Prim. 16mm. Gaped in my hand. Prim. 9,8,7,1 not out of sheath yet. 7+1 on left not out, 5+7 barely broke. Covts except primary out, abula out. Most rectrices barely broke thru. A few head feathers looking thru. Right. 15.4 gm. Prim. 19 mm. A number of head feathers out. All primaries at least broken on end. 3 Prim. (covts) (greater) broke. Most back feathers out. Defecated before weighing. Plain 14.4 gm. Prim. 19 mm. All primaries broken, st. 5th least + barely. A few head feathers out. Intermediate between others, closer to Right, which is most developed. Nest is 18" off ground, 9" from tree horizontally. 10 April 0615: Left 12.0 gm. Prim. 17mm. Neither 9th primary broken but almost a few head feathers out. Most back feathers out, those on upper back least. Plain 13.7 gm. Prim. 21mm. Rt. 9th Prim not out of sheath. Back well feathered. Head feathers a few, out. Ventral apteria nearly covered. Right 14.6 gm. Prim. 21mm. All prim. broken out, st. 9th least. Back w well feathered, many head feathers have begun. Ventral apteria nearly covered. All birds, esp. Right, gaped + legged in hand. All also gave protest notes. Stand on entire tarsus.
