Barber 1956 Journal 49 1.8mi S, 1mi E.Orinda, 7snt Contra Costa Co., Calif. 22 Nov. This is a nice stand of broad leaved sclerophyll forest. Quercus agrifolia predominates but there is a lot of Madrone, some Bay. Brush is heavy in the openings, and is fairly heavy under the trees. The slope is pretty steep. Birds are scarce here in the woods, although I can hear a few; cannot attract them in. Continued in woods for ways, crossed fence into pastured woods, hit an old road, went out into field. Saw Passerella iliaca. Out in sun, could see many jays, and other birds. Saw a Lanius. Varied Thrush (Turdus naevius) on up away. Shot a Sto Syphraeius out of a line oak tree. Saw a Buteo lagopus. No doubt - Saw must patches, rump patch. Had long tail, narrow wings for a buteo. Circled several times, then drifted off in a SE direction. A little later, and farther up, shot a Sitta carolinensis out of a line oak. Also saw here Vireo huttoni I think M[oved] on to another patch of woods, shot & missed an Apleroma, but shot a Junco and 2 Paus inornatus Walked back in field along edge of woods. Birds had quieted down a lot by now (near noon). Missed 2 more jays. Very pleasant day.
