Melospiza melodia 14 May NW woman Men's Fae Club West II - 2 eggs hatched 3 left this morning. One young I picked out of the nest moved some in my hand. Raised its head and gaped, quickly gained "nest" position. Dark streaks under the skin can be seen where the primaries will appear and there is a row of spots down the back where a feather tract will appear. Except for size I can tell no difference between these & the Zonotrichia, even in gape pattern. This visit was about 0700, 1715hrs. Now there are 4 young and only one egg left. Weighed and clipped nails of the four. They tried to move on the pans of the balance but couldn't get far. Only one could move very much. This was the smallest. They all crawled in my hand. Maybe the smoothness of the balance pan was the factor. They could not right themselves when on their backs. They did not sit up but rested on feet and wings (warts) in "egg position" (See Blanchard, 1941) with neck outstretched. Eyes not open. 15 May Peen LSB - Bird with grass in mouth in brian patch near stream. I sang nearby. Then both of them came to take spot in briars. She is gathering material from a willow tree nearby - long shreds of something. She isn't really flying back & forth, but sort of fluttering.
