Stuck my finger thru the remaining egg; it popped a loud explosion, Very little fluid in it. 1745 L-3, 20.2gm. Prim. 23mm. Most head feathers out, but stripe not showing—swell. Primary coverts almost cover remains of primary sheaths. Back well feathered, ventral surface nearly covered. All but central rectrices cut. Jumped off balance 3 times, & out of my hand, Camouflaged in corner of box. R-1 3.8gm. Prim. 8mm. Large no. of central feathers out, but not fan. R-3, 21.5 gm. Prim. 19mm. Defecated prior to weighing, jumped off balance and hid in corner of box. Pt 4+9 Prim not out, left 1st+7+4, Jumped out of my hand twice. Bancroft, West H at 1745, 2 young + 2 eggs. Weighed at 1800, R-1 3.5 + gm. down not completely dry on wings. R-4 3.1 gm. down incompletely dry on wings + mid-back. Both birds assume position of head bent under body R. But even from very awkwardly position, stretch neck up with great show of strength to gape.
