Barko 1956 Journal 24 9 June Menced [Mended] Mendocillo, Calif. Left here about 0730, mileage 11664. Drove to Lake Tahoe, via Sacraments. (99 + 50). Drove as far as we could on 89, to Emerald Bay - Visited Pope Beach, where we saw Yellow Headed Blackbirds (X. xanthocephalus). Stayed just S. of Richardson's on Rt. 89. Very beautiful Lake. Also drove to Fallen Leaf Lake, very mile. Lake Tahoe, El Dorado Co., Calif. Fallen Village Marsh Set 6 mus. up in wet marsh on edge of dry marsh, 6 in dry marsh (meadow) nearly, and 9 mus up + 3 rat traps in pines ponderosa woods. Saw Wilkinson's Sapsucker in woods, heard at least two American Bitterns in the marsh. The marsh is huge, extending from the Pope Beach road at least a mile (probably more) to the south, and 3/4 mi. wide. In the center is an island of 30-35 acres, raised 15 +/- ft. The water seems to be fairly deep, pond lilies grow in some places, grass + sedge cover most of it. 10 June Didn't catch anything in any traps. Flushed an American Bittern in marsh. Left here about 0900, mileage 11935. Drove around lake to Emerald Bay side. Stopped briefly at gambling places just in Nevada. Drove to Truckee + Sage Run Creek Station. Jay Schnell took us and showed us a Dipper (Cinclus Americanus) and nest. Saw a Mt. Blackbird on way back to Truckee. Drove to Nevada City.
