Barbs 1956 Exchanges. Discharge 1 - White Crow A to Song Z. 17 April, Z - See notes under Song Sparrow for this date - Both parents present, & with food, but hesitant about going to nest, I assume because of my presence 20+ ft. away. Finally one bird approached nest, apparently fed, flew away rapidly. Immediately one perched somewhere over my shoulder + song once moved and in about 1/2 minute sang again. After this both birds seemed reluctant to go to nest again, and after 35 minutes watch Z left.' (0725-0800) 18 Apr. Z - Young still with down covering. Eyes just barely open a slit. Feather tract down middle of back can be seen. Do not appear to be suffering any from the exchange. This must be the third day. 19 Apr. Z - Eye slit maybe 3 mm. Primary feather sheaths out of skin about 5mm, others on body barely through skin. Raise up and squeak very faintly when I approached nest. No disturbance when I picked one out of nest. 20 Apr. Z - These are at exactly same stage in development as Nest B was on 19 Apr. Young gaped when I put hand by nest. Picked one out, no grasping, sat quietly up sound in my hand. Made protest noise when I lifted bit to return it to nest.
