Banbe 1957 Melospiza melodia 16. 10 April. SU part Menis Far Bldg: A pair of birds here - 1st time seen 2. Both apparently feeding in fern patch, went to live oakin ferns & sang, & flew up, then to ground with a fluttering flight. E Menis Far Club West W One egg in this nest today. The nest is 12" from ground (where ground is lowest, 2 1/2" across cup, cup 2" deep. The egg is rather cold - about 1/3, large end, is very light. Then there is a narrow band of dark, the rest, about 1/2 toward small end, a lighter brown. No spots on egg. Marked it "1". S. Naval Research Nest X 8:15 Left. 14.4 gm. Prim. 19mm. All primary sheaths broken, 9th barely. Most coverts out or broken. Sits on whole tarsus. Right. 16.7gm. Prim. 22 mm. Crown feathers really blossomed! Most all out except most anterior ones. Crown stripe shows well. Most primaries at least 8mm out of sheath. Sheaths little evident over most of bird. Plain - 15.7 gm. Prim. 22 mm Head stripe beginning to show up. Primaries 2-7 mm out of sheath. Few sheaths evident, ie other feathers cover them. All birds still stand on entire tarsometatarsus, not on feet. Quite frequently a bird will gape when I stretch his right wing out to measure the primaries.
