Melospiza melodia 18 11 April S of Naval Research, Nest X Plain, 16.3 gm. Prim. .25, out up to 13 mm. Defecated now weight 15.2, crown stripe plain as are stripes on throat + breast. Most all feathers new on head, out of sheath. Put white band on left leg. Continually gave high pitched "pip" while in my hand. Sat on my finger, almost tried to walk off. Another small defecation, not enclosed in sac. Left, 15.3 gm. Prim. .22 mm, out 4-9, Crown stripe fairly plain, but quite a few anterior feathers still in sheaths. Breast stripes fairly plain. Many feathers still restricted by sheath. Site a whole tarsus. Black band on right leg. When I put bird "left" back, bird "right" had got out of nest, I tried unsuccessfully to get him, but he got several feet from nest in briars. This was 1805 hrs, 12 April 0830. Still 2 birds in the nest, not particularly jumpy. Crouched low in nest. E of Men's Fac, Club Nest W 10:00 The third egg is here, I marked it # 3. S of Naval Research, Nest X At 1630 hrs, one bird "Left" (black band on right leg) was only one left in nest. Its crown stripe was fully developed - didn't look further, 13 April SW Corner Highland Hall Strong Sparrow territory here. Carrying food to a nest in low non-thorny shrubs. Couldn't find nest.
