Sayornis nigricans
28 April, 1956, Hopland Exp. Sta., Mendocino Co., Calif.
Nest of mud with some grass on building
side under overhang roof, about 2 inches
below roof. Nest O-shaped, about 4 inches
in diameter. 4 eggs, white with a few
speckles of black scattered over them.
Another nest in similar location and of
similar construction on old barn near
H.Q. contained young.
U.C. Campus, Berkeley, Alameda Co., Calif.
3 Nov. A bird was seen on the N. side of
LSB, outside MVZ, near the ledge and word
"Anatomy". (One seen less about 1 P.M. one day
a couple weeks ago). This one was heard,
then seen catching insects from this ledge.
It next flew to a horse chestnut tree near
the corner of MV2. Here it replaced a
Hyloiclla ustulata, and may actually have
chased it. The thrush also was "fly-catching".
The phoebe remained in area for at least
half an hour. (See Hyloichla ustulata, sp. act.)
It remained a very short time in the tree,
about 10 ft. off ground, then returned
to the ledge and the top of a poplar tree
by steps. Later: 1:10 P.M. Phoebe still here,
near back of horse chestnut, moving
toward NW corner MV2. It is chipping
constantly, a loud, single note, down-
slurred a little, with an upward jerk of
the tail accompanying each note.
Observed in same area again at 3:05 and 3:45 P.M.
