Grey Lodge Waterfowl Refuge Butte Co., Calif.
There were a few Lindby Ducks on the
refuge also. I pulled heads off many
of the ducks and geese to make skulls.
Don Medina and I each brought a Snow
Goose back. Drove over some roads in
the refuge just before sundown. By
now the Geese were beginning to
leave in great flocks, mostly headed
east, presumably to feed. This
movement continued until long after dark.
Sun: morning about 9 AM we
again walked over a good bit of the
refuge. Aside from flushing more
Pheasants (probably several hundred)
the scene was about the same. Saw
several crippled birds, 2 Dowitchers and
a Least Sandpiper were along the edge
of the refuge, along with some Killdeer.
Gathered more heads, for skulls. Picked
up a Gadwall for a museum skeleton.
Saw a young Golden Eagle from far
off, in a tree, and worked up to 50 or so
yards before it flushed. Saw a number
of Turkey Vultures, some with wings
outspread, sunning. Dr. Miller + some
others saw 3 Whistling Swans but I
missed them. Left the refuge about
2 PM., drove over back roads of the
Sacramento River valley. Saw a Rock Vireo
on a fence made of the lavender of the
Marysville Buttes. Saw several Brownish
Owls. Picked up a foot in good shape.
See species accounts for many birds listed.
