4 Sept. Rocky Mt. National Park, Colo.
ground squirrel (S. notal). Picas were also seen. Two Canada Jays + a Clark Nutcracker in beautiful fresh ad. plumage present. Steller Jay also there. Took many pictures of Marmot, Chipmunk, ground squirrel, and Nutcracker. Saw a bird flying which was White nixed crossbill or Pine grosbeak. Wing bars very evident. Each + head very bright red. Black bill and like this eye.
Farther on, 'at next point' saw more Nutcrackers, Canada and Steller Jays also here were Junco caniceps. Chipmunks + ground squirrels all very fat, were getting handsome. A Goshawk flew over. This was extremely fascinating seeing so many new or seldom seen (for me) birds + animals. The beauty of the park is beyond description. The snow in the few remaining places is dirty, but the greens of the evergreen and the oranges reds and yellows of the poplars contrast beautifully. The tundra is interesting but I couldn't investigate enough to write much about it.
Arrived Denver about 5:30 PM. Stayed in Shirley Savoy Hotel, HQ, for $64.
5 Sept. Denver Meetings in Denver Museum. Met a lot of people. Looked over muse. in evening.
