6 A.M. Tried to record young birds in nest C
at 0630-0800 today. An awful lot of
background noise. The equipment is such:
Cresent recorder, meter, and auto
battery. Rented the recorder, meter, ear
phones, etc. and bought tape (2 7" reels,
dual track), 12 spools, leads, splice, for
46.46. Battery cost 4.00 (3+1 package).
Built a cart out of wood + wheels Jay
& I got from the dump. Worked fine until a
wheel came off. I held the mike
close to the nest, tried to get the birds
that way. Not much. Lodged mike in
bushes to get sounds as & fed them,
but she wouldn't go to nest when I
was so close. Then outside noise
became too much.
U.C Campus - Did the first exchange today
at about 1100, with the help of J Schnell.
White Crown nest A had 3 eggs 5+4 or 6+4
day of incubation. Song Sparrow nest 2
had 2 eggs, 3rd day of incubation. White
Crown eggs considerably larger than others.
Took 2 eggs from B, put in 2 nest,
took those 2 and put in nest A. Broke
the other egg from A while trying to make
it. Put eggs in museum eggs box,
walked as fast as I could from White Jay
kept White Crown off nest.
