Dec. 1 - 2, 1956
Gray Lodge Wildlife Refuge Butte Co., Calif.
Left Berkeley about 8 AM Sat Dec. 1 with
Zoo 136 (Ornithology) field trip, Dr. Miller in
charge. 11 people on trip. Took Rt. 40 to
near Wavis, turned off to Woodland. Saw a
flock of Long Billed Curlews along Rt. 40. South
of woodland picked up a DOR Falco
sparariius. North of Woodland picked up
an Acorn Woodpecker, then later a
Red Tailed Hawk. As we neared the
lodge I could see in the distance huge
flocks of Geese and ducks. At a small pond
at the edge of the refuge saw Red Backed
Sandpipers, Least Sandpiper, Dowitcher,
Greater Yellow Legs, and Gout. Arrived
at the refuge proper about 12:30 or 1 PM.
and immediately saw more Snow Geese
than I ever knew existed. Acres and
acres of flat marshy land were just
covered with Snow Geese and Pintails,
with White Fronted Goose and Baldpates
spinkled in. After lunch we looked at
a group of captives in a cage and observed
them for field marks, etc. There were here
Whistling Swan, Fulvous tree duck, Rars Goose
Snow Goose, Canada Goose (2 races) Baldpate,
Shoreller, European Widgeon, White Fronted Goose,
Ring Necked Duck, Redhead, Wood Duck, and
possibly others. Took a walk then
part of the refuge, down dikes and along
the edge of the refuge. Flushed lots of
Ring necked Pheasants. Red Tailed Hawks were
abundant. Saw Sandhill Cranes flying
and feeding in flocks of 50+, with the
