Agelaius phoeniceus
Reclus.
18 April 1957
I. Smith, Mt E Orinda, 750ft., Contra Costa Co., Calif.
Quite a few of these birds in net but likely pasture, Mostly ♂. Sang + called from anything sticking up over the grass.
Very often in clumps of thistle. Killed one bird, ♂ plumage, 66.4 gm. Put it in Formalin for dissection for Comp., Anat. project.
Dissected this bird 17 May 1957, Bird is ♂, left testis 9mm.
Removed left lung and heart for later view. General aspect much like jay, but smaller of course. Liver seems more central, less lateral, possibly comparatively larger (rt. lobe)
Esophagus: opens from pharynx, goes as a wide tube for first 20mm., then narrows considerably, almost could be considered a crop. Continues dorsally 15mm under liver, flght at top margin of liver widens into proventriculus. This is very near to mid-line, a wee bit to left of center.
Liver: Two distinct lobes, right much larger. Left lobe extends very slightly toward side of body. Right lobe has one extension of posterior part well to left of [illegible] mid-line, and one narrow anterior projection to mid-line OF dorsal body wall. Left lobe has ventral pointing projection just left of mid-line. Left lobe generally triangular, right lobe roughly rectangular ♂.
