9 June Indian Springs N side Mt Mac Bride, 7300ft, Co. New. It was raining when we entered New. In about 1 mile we saw Joshua Trees, Did not see any birds for long ways. Pretty soon came to Pizon which became thicker the further me went. Most of the low area is just sage scrub, with the pizon on the slopes. It got very tall & big green places. We drove in around Pigeon Springs, the rain was about over. There is a trail here, + the mile is working. On down the Pigeon Springs road there are numerous roads + cabins, occupied, and thus not available for us. The canyons around here are very thickly covered with Pizon, with sage understory, of course. We drove on and spotted a group of rumored "buildings" here at Pigeon Spring, There is a spring with a little pond, and a good roofed small building which we inspected. Also a riddled house, 2 underground rooms, and a useless shed. We had to park on road and pack in, perhaps 150 yds. Put here 1800, had camp set up + supper over at 1930, the sun came out & it looked good in the west. But clouded up again later. Just about sunset we went owl-hunting. Had not gone very far when me heard people talking. On way back me heard Pion-swall, and a Screech Owl, Otus asio. This latter was at 2030. Lt. Could not call it in. Very windy, quite cold. Got back to camp
