Caught 2 birds with brown crowns, white barely coming in, in museum special trips, one in morning one in evening. Both had completely 2 layered skulls, both ?, weights 25.7 and 25.9 gm. #161, 167 Tres Palmas, Vallecito Valley, 900 ft., San Diego Co, Calif. Shot an adult plumaged bird, mt. 26.4 gm. # 1/62. Not one of 26, probably ? 15 Feb. 1957 Ellsworth + Durant Berkeley, Alameda Co. Calif. On this corner could hear 3 singing birds, along ths Ellsworth. One was near Med Bldg., on SE corner; another further S.; the third about 1/2 way to Bancroft, between house + church. This bird one has a peculiar song - I noticed it yesterday also. The first 2 notes are clear and loud, but the remainder of the song seems to get caught in the throat. It can be heard when close, but is very weak and soft, not whistled at all. It will be interesting to see what effect this has on his obtaining a mate or holding a territory. Maybe it is a first year bird and the song will develop. There was a territory he last year, but I noticed no odd song. 16 Feb. 1957 Near Med Bldg, Ellsworth ths., Berkeley A bird here in corner of parking lot singing in small piece of ledge, definitely in answer to a bird around on the side of the bldg. No mate seen.
