Barks 1956 Journal 29 28 Apr. Hopland Exp. Station, Mendocino Co., Calif. Dr. Longhurst and Dr. Heady spent the day taking us around showing us the area and the projects underway. This station, northern Mendocino Co., is 4600 acres, 18% chaparral, 30% rangeland, 25% grass, the rest oak forest, cultivated, etc. It is managed by UC (Davis) mainly for sheep range experiments. Longhurst is the resident zoologist, Heady is range ecologist from UC (Berkeley). Al Murphy is the manager (or Sup't.) 29 Apr. Return to Berkeley via coast. Made a couple stops for observing some aspects of the coastal conifer forest. Birds seen included: Cal Quail, Bullock's Oriole, House Finch, Chipping Sparrow, Black Phoebe, Robin, Redwing, T. White, Calif. Woodpecker, Violet-green Swallow, Green-backed Goldfinch Morning Dove, Calif. Jay, Plain Titmouse, Downy Woodpecker, Lark Sparrow, Western Bluebird Warbling Vireo, Var Red-tailed Hawk, Raven, Orange-crowned Warbler, Andean Warbler Bush-tit, Solitary Vireo, Golden Eagle, House Wren, Golden-crowned Sparrow, Squirrel Owl, and on return added Black-headed Grosbeak, Stellar Jay, Bering Wren, Yellow Warbler, Pileated Woodpecker, American Merganser (1♀), Piledated Warbler, Western Flycatcher, Western Gull, Ring-billed Gull. Also Red-shafted Flicker, Sparrow Hawk, Red-shouldered Hawk (?). Pictured 2 Sceloporus occidentalis 1 Collected by D. Roberts.
