Junk's, B.C. 1956 Journal 5- 7 10 Feb. 1956 0720z Along athletic field on Bancroft St. P. of White Crowned Sparrows. I have seen them in several preceding days act very secretive. Today are sitting about 4 ft high, sang several times. One other flushed from under some Cotonaster, then continued feeding pretty much in open. Singing bird flew W. when people approached, sang in another bush, then was silent, feeding in that area, on ground. I judge singing bird a 8, other a 4. 2 gave a note a few times, a sharp high pitched "peechi". 8 came back into open to feed more readily than 4 after pedestrians passed. In same area, Robin's fed on Cotonaster berries, a quail (unm., very dark) sat for while on wall watching. This is opposite day on Epis Church. Another White Crown sang farther East, in same strip, did not bother the first pr. This pair was E. of drive going into Ath. Field. Fed in grass. Saw Brown Towhees in same place. One White Crown (??) carried piece of food into bushes. Other followed. Pedestrian came, both birds flew E. Sang Sparrows then flew to cyclone fence along cement wall, sang loudly. This is adjacent to Dana St. still on Bancroft. Pedestrians chased Wh. Crowns W. again, where both fled about 6 ft high in a bush. One gave "peechi" as heard before. This one was
