Banks, D.C. 1956 Melospiza melodia Song Sparrow 25. 12 Apr. Bean Man's Fae. Club Nest Z - still 2 eggs, & flushed from nest. Stream NLSB, Nest Y - no change. 13 Apr. Bean Man's Fae. Club. Nest Z - No change at 0900. & flushed from nest. 17 Apr. Bird w/ broken tail seen by NE corner lldy. Another bird flushed from nest. Nest contains two young, probably hatched yesterday. When I sat 20ft. from nest to observe, adults gave three types of note - mainly a high-pitched "tsip", sometimes a lower pitched "chip", occasionally the more raspy typical alarm note. Many variations on these notes were also heard, and many in between there. Seldom did two notes in a row sound the same. There seemed to be only one bird, I think the one flushed from the nest, doing the solding See notes under "Exchanges". After about 10 min., this one moved across tree close to lldy. and broken tailed bird appeared. Both were more quiet now, not chipping so loud or so much, and giving a more typical bushier note. Finally one bird approached nest, but I could not tell which one, or whether it fed. I think it did After 35 min. I left. 18 Apr. Stream S LSB near sheds - found nest with 3 young (nest X) in brin bogle. Young are about 8 days old. Stripes already beginning to show on head. They crouched down and were silent when I went near nest.
