Aceronates sapatalis 1. 25 April U.C. Campus Berkeley, Alameda C., Caly A flock of 5 White Throated Swifts flying & feeding around Camsonle on Campus. Up high, about level of clock face. All birds flew out from tower pretty much together, then all fly in toward tower, calling, swooping by the S & E sides where it's sunny (0640). Occasionally land or at least catch hold of side of building. One or two landed momentarily on clock members. Their calling is a series of chips, rather harsh, fairly high pitched, and varying in speed. Occasionally cliff swallows mix in but don't fly into tower area. A few minutes later, now there are more swifts, at least 6, maybe 7-8. Two birds flew to same place at tower, hung together in free fall for several feet. Often the birds fly in the group to one small area of the tower, seem to flutter together, then all leave. Occasionally one or two would fly to the W side of the tower, which was in the shade, but most of the activity was around the clock face of the S side, and the S & corner area. Also, there are 2 birds mixing with the cliff swallows around LSB, S & entrance. The one bird came in and "buzzed" the whole line of swallow nests, with loud chips. 26 April A group of 4 going thru the same sort of activities at 0630 this morning.
