Bads 1957 Zonotrichia l. metallin' 30 14 April, Nest G. 1800, R-3 6.1gm. Held its head up t be eject for long time - 30 sec. Balanced on tonsi + back (ventral part) of abdomen. Gaped very determinedly, esp. when touched. Dark spots that will be feathers are very evident inc. a few now on ant. part of ventral tract, where 2 lateral tracts join. Faint noises when legging. R-4 6.0gm. Feather spotting (see above) not quite as definite. This bird also gaped, sitting only on ventral part of body. No sound heard, R-1. 5.6gm. Same remarks apply as about R-3, except spots for feathers not as definite under throat. No sounds but active gaping. 15 April. 0600 R-1 5.6gm. Spotting that will be feathers very plain now on crown, back, breast + rest of wings, just above tibiae, thighs, and some less evident on ant. part of ventral tract. R-3 6.3gm. Same remarks as above, with perhaps even darker spots. R-4 6.1gm. Same as R-1. These birds are all at precisely the same stage judging from appearance. All gaped; all had trouble staying right side up; tended to fall on back or sides.
