Banks 1957 Melospiza melodia 5. 2 April Bridge S of LSB, Campus Two fighting birds. First seen engaged in a chase! Then they met head on, evidently grasped bills and rose into the air. They repeated this, falling to the ground, where they lay for a couple seconds, still clutching with bills and possibly with feet. Then into air a few feet again, falling back to ground, still together, laying on sides with wings stretched. When in air beat each other with wings. Finally separated, flew a few feet apart. (This is by W end of bridge). One sang weakly, flew & across bridge. Other sang more strongly. Then first flew back, both flew W about 30 ft. When flying used a peculiar very fast fluttering wingbeat. Flew back to starting area, sat about a foot apart. One mounted small bush, sang several tries - song is very weak & high pitched. Other sang from his place further W (after flying back) song normal but weak. Bird flew back & across bridge. Probably a territorial struggle. Stream S of LSB. A singing bird, probably the strong singing one from above note, sing's across stream from shed. Was very disturbed while I was in the area. It flew upstream toward bridge & kept on singing. I flew up toward him from willows, in a minute returned to center of willow clump. Found nest, 2 young several days old, and one egg. Call it Z.
