I thought I had some notes about the flights of these birds but cannot find them. All day Sat., and possibly Fri. afternoon, we saw small flocks of finches. They were giving a characteristic finch flight note - a chip. All were flying the same direction, as I remember and check back on the map it was.
They flew fairly high and fast, and as a rule did not alight anywhere around our camp, but flew on. However it became very cloudy Sat. afternoon, and rained a lot. During these rainy spells the flights were forced down, and landed on the ground and rocks near camp, still giving the same notes. They were still very mild, but I shot two, as described on the preceding page.
This looks like an imm. J in post juvenile molt with little fat, and an ad J, very fat. What I consider the younger bird is heavier, but less fat. Has the ad. already had his post-primial molt? This plumage on both is very good.
