Banks 1956 Melospiza melodia 29. 25 Apr. Stream N LSB Nest Y - Three young, all raised heads and gaped when I put hand on nest. Mouth is red, lined with yellow, but not as red as White Crowns. There are two light spots on the end of the tongue... One I picked out of the nest was active in my hand, stretching wings, trying to move. Feather quills on wings are cut 3-4 mm., and are beginning to show on other parts of the body. There was no sound that I could hear. Pearl Mar's Fac Club, Nest Z - This nest destroyed and young gone. Can see a trail through the area, going out the opposite way that I go, some fairly large animal. Adults skipping nearby. 27 Apr. Stream S LSB Area of Nest X - Adult bird flew into area with food (little green worm-like objects) in mouth. Hopped around and occasionally into weed patch, but retained food. Flew away once, but returned with the food still in its beak. Finally after much hesitation it went into weed patch which had held Nest X, returned without food. Sat on a dead Umbelliferae, wiped bill on both sides of plant. Seemed to be wiping off excess food, or somehow cleaning around edge of bill. 28 Apr. Stream N LSB Nest Y Tired recording nestlings from truck. They make so little noise it probably didn't pick up.
