Banks 1956 Journal 36. 23 June Blackhills 2.6 mi N Orinda Village 1026 ft Contra Costa Co. completely bare areas, esp. on top. On the west slope is chaparral, on the north more ______ with a form more like scrub. Our traps were on the West and north slopes. Also caught 2 Peromyscus (18-19) calif./Bench Wm., Thymonanes lenkii. Birds seen & heard in area were: Aphelocoma, Buteo borealis, Carthartes aura, Psaltriparus minimus, Chaereaea fasciata, Pipilo erythrothalmus (mantatus), Traps baited with walnut. 24 June Picked up traps this morning. Had 2 Peromyscus (18-19) small. Also had 1ad 3 lin & Pipilo erythrothalmus, 1 Thymonanes lenkii, 1 Chaereaea, 1 Pams momentus. Saw several hummingbirds, some bird sp., as yesterday. Bucholder in hollow to S, & on road farther down. Rather surprised at getting so many birds. Must be insects on the east that attracts them. 7 July. Set traps 6 July, 7PM, on S + E sides, around a little W to N. Set 1 rat trap near an old wood-nat house, cobwebs all over it. Set 4 bird line traps. This morning had 1 ? Vervona fascipes, 1 ? Peromyscus sp., 1 ? Pipilo fuscus, 1 ? Chaereaea fasciata. Several traps sprung, the one by the rat house moved a ways. Flushed & goatsucker, rather small, little white on wings.
