anks R.C. 1956 Song Sparrow 9 March Plain (E.) of Union Bldg. - Song Sparrow singing in tree just N of bridge. Could not find a female anywhere around. E. of Dee. Art Annex - Bird singing in clump of Acacia. Flew across walk, sang from tree top. Returned to ground under Acacia. Joined bird in hedge across walk. Both jumping around uttering soft notes & occasionally weak phrases of song. Notes were soft, liquid, almost chick like. After this cop playing for several minutes & flew to another section of hedge, sang loudly. Returned to Acacia and sang. Plain (E) of Fac. Bldg. - Two sets of birds here. One pair & trilling & portuning, by bridge closest to building; this bridge runs E-W. Another bird singing E of bridge running N-S, farther up stream. Singing bird is high up in Sequoia. Moved low into shrubs along stream. Preened under right wing with bill. Continued singing. Another bird singing still farther upstream. I moved away and returned to N-S bridge. Saw bird sitting on rail, & trilling close to bldg. Bird from bridge mounted tree & sang. Trilling bird in dead material of tree, seemed to be thinking of nest material. Flew without anything to down part of Sequoia near bridge. I started to sing. I have couple tail feathers on right side broken or bent down - easy target. Both birds now on ground, very close.
