New leaves are coming out on Quercus agrifolia trees defoliated by oak moths last year; Aesculus is well leaved out, even in the shade; Rhus diversiloba leaves opening up; Smil- axina is in bud. - all these along lower cyclo- tron Road. As to birds, the singing of about 5 each of Vermivora celata and Wilsonia pusilla was conspicuous on the N. facing slope. Cogswell 1949 Journal 33 Apr. 24. Arroyo Mocho (SE of Livermore) to Mt. Hamilton, Ala. meda & Santa Clara Co., Calif. Drove via Walnut Creek to Alamo [where we stopped for 5 min. to note birds along the creek bed: Calif. Quail - 8; Wood Pewee - 1; Cedar Waxwing - 15; Yellow Warbler, song heard; Cowbird - 2; Black-headed Grosbeak - {dead on road; Scrub Jay - 1; and House Finch, Green-backed Goldfinch, several each] and thence to Dublin & Livermore, where we followed Audubon Field Trip Group to point in Arroyo Mocho "wash" about arriving there about 9:30 A.M. 4 mi. SE of town. The most birds seen all day were in this area of scattered Sycamores & Blue Oaks with much 1 ft. high grass between. The stream is drying to a slow trickle, but attracts several of the warblers, and my son Denis & another boy found several turtles (Clemmys maximata) in it, one of which, about 3" long, we brought home. At least 5 Thamnophis sp. were also found in brief stops at several points along 1/2 mi. or so of stream bed. Many Citellus beecheyi were out in other holes were maximata the grassy areas, especially along the old Terrace back a ways from stream bed. Many areas about 15 x 30' or so were cropped to about 1/2 height of rest of grass - forming conspicuous depressions upon careful observation. I wonder whether there are due to the squirrels? We covered the "wash" area until 11:30 and then started up the long dirt road to Mt. Hamilton, stopping for lunch at 8.70 mi. marker (from junction of Mines & Tesla Rd.).

Cogswell 1949 Journal 36 May 7. San Joaquin Experimental Range, alt. 1000', SSW of O'neals Makeria Co., Calif. From my sleeping bag this A.M. at 0400 - violet green swallows calling overhead, stars dimming out slightly. 0430 - acorn woodpecker called & flew to another tree. 0500 - most birds in voice; Calif. Quail had just started 0540 - sunrise. Between 0525 and 0600 I covered the area just E. of the headquarters buildings. From 0800 to about 0915 we (Ecology class) were afield near the buildings but with instruction in range management going on, bird & mammal observation was limited. From then until noon we visited (by car) several spots To the S & SW of headquarters including cattle & rodent exclosures & the unused rodent enclosures. From 1330 to 1600 we walked away from headquarters to the NE through the "natural area" (improved since 1934) and returned along the creek just W. of it. I kept noting birds as occasion arose, but found no significant differences in habitat other than in the "yard" around headquarters. Species Those identified are listed below (* = see species account) Turkey vulture - 10+ Red-tailed hawk - 8+ * Calif. quail - 30+ mourning dove - 5 Roadrunner - 1 acorn woodpecker - 3 nuttall's *west. kingbird - 25+ ashtroated flycatcher - 10+ *violet green swallow - 15+ scrub jay plain titmouse white-breasted nuthatch Phainopepla Loggerhead Shrike Bullock Oriole brewers blackbird cowbird house finch green-backed goldfinch 15+ 10+ 1 2 1 7 20+ 3+ 50+ 3+ 19

Cogswell 1949 Journal 41 May 8 Mariposa Grove Big Trees Yosemite Nati Park, Calif. alt.6500' (contd). We left the area about 12:10 after having taken several photos, and noted the ff. vertebrates: Dendrocopos villosus - 1 heard Cyanocitta stelleri - 2 " Sitta canadensis - 1 " Certhia familiaris - 1 " singing Dendroica auduboni - 1 " + 1(other?) calling Hesperiphora vespertina - many in the tree tops, to judge by the calls emanating therefrom. Both the rattle and the wheezy whistle notes were frequent. I saw 1♂ at close range. Citellus lateralis - 2 together in sunny spot among approx.40 acre forest trees (not Sequoias) containing rock outcrop. Fish Camp, about 5000' alt., 2 mi. S of So. entrance to Yosemite Nati Park, Calif (Mariposa G.) - Lunch stop by the roadside here (about 31/4 hour). I took 15 min. tour of immediately adjacent Ceanothus cordulatus? thicket and conifer forest + walled from road as we ate. Following is list of species noted: Dendrocopos vellosus - 1 heard Contopus richardsoni - " " Nutellornis mesoleucus - " " Empidonax (hammondi?) - 1 Cyanocitta stelleri - 2 Dendroica aestivala - 1(♂)♂(sng) " occidentals - 2♂ " Oporornis tolmiei - 1♂ Hesperiphora vespertina - 1 heard Junco oreganus - 5 Passerella iliaca - 1(sng) Tamiasciurus douglasii - 1 heard Citellus lateralis - 2 fairy slope a few miles to S., where 1 Sciurus griseus also noted. A few Pinus murrayana were seen along the road just N. of here; otherwise the area is typical middle transition zone coniferous forest. No oaks in this area, though found abundantly on SE?

Cogswell 1950 Journal 7 Apr. 1-3 Pacific Grove, Monterey Co., Calif. - Spent these 3 days at Regional Conference of the National Audubon Society, leading large groups of people on field trips to Point Lobos State Park on the 2nd, and to Elkhorn Slough in the am on the 3rd. No detailed notes could be taken under these circumstances; but the bird species encountered are entered in my personal roll book record. Outstanding ones were 8 Black Oyster-catchers, 1 Creeper, several Pelicans (Digon, Suitability), and numbers of Western Gulls and a handful of Pelagic Cormorants at Pt. Lobos. None seems to be nesting as yet there, except possibly the crevice-inhabiters. Apr. 3 At Elkhorn Slough we covered only the N arm from the mouth to above the causeway & S end near of old mouth. On the beach at this latter site close to base of the dunes & well above but did not catalog any recent high tides, I obtained parts of the skeleton of a porpoise (Lagenorhynchus obliquidus) (most of skull, a few vertebrae, 1 humerus). This animal I knew had been there since last July (see 1949 Journal p. 47), at which time I was not equipped to bring it in. Now it was in remnants & partly covered with sand. Birds worthy of special mention at Elkhorn were: Oldsquaw, 12; Lesser Scamp, 40+, 34; Western Grebe, 15+; Black Brant; 14 (see sp. unit); Long-billed Curlew - 4+; Hudsonian Curlew - 1; Red-bibbed Sandpiper - 2+ (only). Apr. 4 Berkeley, Alameda Co., Calif. - At M.V.Z. this a.m. Dr. Benson says the porpoise is probably a Delphinus gillii (see above). I gave it to him for accession & presumably he will give it his no.
