Dec. 26 Santa Monica Mts. above Hollywood & Beverly Hills
L.A. Co., Calif. From 6:35 a.m. until 5:15 pm
I was afield participating in the Los Angeles
Christmas Bird Count. Areas covered were
Wonderview Canyon (side canyon E from Cahuenga Pass),
Lake Hollywood vicinity, Cahuenga Creek
(by trail to summit of "west" peak), Mulholland
Drive from Beverly Glen Blvd. to Head of Stone
Canyon, upper Fredell Canyon (N slope of Mts).
Birds in general were exceedingly scarce
compared to previous years in many of
those same localities. Only 5 robins were
seen all day, for instance, despite abundant
toyon berries; and the total count of
Audubon warblers was only 43 (normally
in hundreds). Areas covered included sage
brush (for Rufous-crowned Sparrows - 3 seen),
chaparral of 2+ types, the Sycamore-oak-
sycamore canyon woodland. Total list of
Birds re-
corded are entered in my roll book.
Deer tracks were plentiful, & 1 doe
was jumped on the N slope near Stone Canyon.
1 covey of Quail, about 12 were seen. 4
Turkey Vultures flew westward along the
L.A. River about 2 p.m., when temp. was
up to about 70°. 3 Red-tails, including
a very black melano, soared about Cahuenga.
1 Red-breasted Sapsucker found working on
1 of 2 lone oaks in small draw above L. Hollywood.
