Dec. 4- Gray Lodge Refuge, S.W. Butte Co., Calif.
coming in in fair shape. Lack of swans
shows that normal winter flocks are
not yet all here.
After lunch we drove around 3/4 of the
outer loop road, stopping [illegible] for 15 min.
or so along Butte Creek [illegible] at NW end
of refuge. Birds seen in the riparian
growth there, are marked with (r.) in the
list below.
Leaving the refuge about 4:00 p.m. we
drove toward the Buttes thence [illegible]
the road which skirts the NW corner
of them. Here we saw a huge flock
of geese, 3+ species, and 1 of 220+
cranes — all spreading out on
stubble fields at dusk to feed.
