Coggswell 1949 Journal 130 Dec. 4- Gray Lodge Refuge, S.W. Butte Co., Calif. coming in in fair shape. Lack of swans shows that normal winter flocks are not yet all here. After lunch we drove around 3/4 of the outer loop road, stopping [illegible] for 15 min. or so along Butte Creek [illegible] at NW end of refuge. Birds seen in the riparian growth there, are marked with (r.) in the list below. Leaving the refuge about 4:00 p.m. we drove toward the Buttes thence [illegible] the road which skirts the NW corner of them. Here we saw a huge flock of geese, 3+ species, and 1 of 220+ cranes — all spreading out on stubble fields at dusk to feed. List of Bird Species seen on or near Gray Lodge Refuge, S.W.
