Ogwell 1949 Phalacrocorax pelagicus July 17 - "Bird Rock", 17 mile Drive, Monterey Peninsula Cal. There is a fringe of this species around the Cal. lowest slopes of the islet, which is covered far above them with P. penicillatus. I could not be sure whether there were any active nests of pelagicus. - Pt. Lobos, Monterey Co., Calif. - Several dun. bred here, most of them nesting in miles or on ledges of cliffs of the "bird Islands" off the S. shore of the peninsula. Here again P. penicillatus occupies the higher, gentler slopes & pelagicus the steeper cliffs closer to the water. 1 photo taken of 3 nests I was able to approach most closely. They contain young from 1/2 to 3/4 grown, the former still in entire fuzzy black down.
