Monterey, Monterey Co., Calif.
We drove from Berkeley after dark last night, camped at Elkhorn Slough but left there at 6:30 a.m. today (while still but little daylight) and came here to go on a boat trip offshore.
Miss Jocelyn Tyler and Robert Norris, who came with us, had reservations for a p.m. trip -- but my wife, Bessie, & son Denis went aboard the "Jolly Roger" at 8:00 a.m. Passengers totalled 22 & included Chas. Sibley, Harry Adamson, L. Carl, Mrs. Ethel Richardson & others from the S.F. Bay region.
We left the harbor at 8:15 a.m., passed the buoy marking the N. end of Pt. Pinos rocks at 8:43, then headed approximately due west until about 10:15 a.m. According to the boat operator we were then about 13-15 miles out from the harbor. We then turned N & NNE for 1-1/2 miles & thence back eastward (due E magnetic) & returned to the bay mouth at 11:30 & into the dock at 11:55 a.m.
Estimates of, the birds seen, by species and approximate distance offshore are listed on the next page. The weather was clear with a fog bank visible well beyond the point which we reached. Sea was quite smooth. I baited the gulls with chunks of sardine and mackerel, but got no response from other species.
