Feb. 5 Staten Id., near Walnut Grove to Terminus, San Joaquin, Calf. - After driving along the relatively birdless Sacramento River and crossing it at Walnut Grov,
then also across the N. Fork of the Mokelumne, we again found waterfowl in nos. In the very same field where we had seen a huge flock of ducks & a few geese on Feb. 5, 1949, there were today fully 3000 white-fronted Geese, plus about 5 big Canadas & a no. of Lessers. As I remember it last year the crop was asparagus - plowed under. This year the south end was corn - still standing ; & the northern plowed - but apparently had been corn.
About 1/2 way along the length of the island we saw about 20 Sandhill Cranes far off across green fields to the east. Other species seen on Staten Id. included : Great Blue Heron (several), Am Egret (several) ; White-tailed Kite (2); Cooper's Hawk, 1; Red tail - 2 ; Marsh Hawk, several ; Sparrow Hawk, several ; Calif Quail (heard) ; Ring-necked Pheasant, Black Gallinule - 5+ ; Coot, many ; Wilddeer ; Ferruginous Gull - 2+ ; Calif. & Ring-billed Gulls ; Mourning Dove - 30+ (nearly all on edge of same field as the geese); Burrowing Owl, 2 ; Red-shafted Flicker, Black Phoebe ; Scrub Jay ; Crow ; Meadowlark ; Red-wing ; Brewer's Blackbird ; House Finch ; Am Goldfinch ; Lawrence White-crowned & Song Sparrows.
More geese (white-fronts & Lesser Canadas) at south end of island.
