Dendroica auduboni
Oct. 12 - University of Calif., Berkeley, Calif.
First of the season heard, near west state,
but may have been present for some time as
I haven't been out to cover the area thoroly
for over 2 weeks.
Dec. 30. 1/3 to 2 mi. SW of San Luis Obispo, S.L.O. Co., Calif.
One compact flock (!) of about 25 was feeding
on the lawn of a cemetery at the edge of
town. They hopped over the grass, jumping
first one way & then the other to pick up
something from the grass blades. No insects
were being caught in the air (morning is
still cold!). Other such compact flocks
were seen along farm country roadsides
near Laguna school; those flocks (10+, 25+
estimated in them) foraging, like the first,
with apparent disregard for nearby trees,
by flitting along in & over the weeds &
grass.
