Stellula calliope
Apr. 10 Jambone Ranger Station, 3400' alt., just W. Jambone Creek,
Travumne Co., Calif. A male was seen performing a nuptial flight over the willow tree next to cabin.
The arc described was about 30 ft. from top to bottom (about 10 times), and shaped thus: U, then reversed.
The course followed on the downsweep was steady, but there was a distinct wavering on the up-hill side, especially toward the end. Instead of the "raspberry" sound which I recall as given by this sp. in San Gabriel Mtns. of southern California, this one emitted a strained, whining-like sound as it neared and passed the bottom of the curve.
According to Jack Woolstenhulme there was a 7 hummer perched on the willow at the time the S was performing; but I did not see her until she flew over to the tree over our heads and buzzed around the cathins as though gathering nest material. She was very small, undoubtedly this species.
