Cogswell 1949 Puffinus opisthomelas -1 July 4. Pt. Pinos, Monterey Co., Calif. at least 3 different birds of this species among the numbers of P. griseus just off shore here in late P.M. They were close enough to see white under- parts & wing lining & compare size (decidedly smaller) with both the Sooty Shearwater & Heermann's Gull. May have been much more common; but certainly far less numerous than P. griseus. I noted no distinctive flight features, but I was unable to follow individuals of this species for very long with my binoculars. at least 4 seen among hordes of passing P. griseus. [which see].
