Turdus migratorius 1. 1948 Oct. 8 - Near west state, Univ. of Calif., Berkeley, Calif. Several heard "whisper-singing" from high up in eucalyptus trees at about 8:45 A.M. The sky was partly cloudy, temperature about 65°F.; very warm day yesterday. Oct. 13 - 800 block, Indian Rock Ave., Berkeley, Calif. at least 5, possibly many more, perched on wires, shrubbery, or feeding on Pyracantha berries.. Nov. 7 - 4 mi" W.S.W. of Palo Alto, San Mateo Co., Calif. only 1 recorded (heard only) in 1½ hrs. spent in area rich in berry type of food. Plenty of Photinia, snowberry, poison oak, and some coffeeberry. Nov. 21 - Lakeport to just W Kelseyville, Lake Co., Calif. a large straggling flock estimated at about 2000 birds flew restlessly thru pear orchards along highway; some coming down to ground & some to perches in trees. A new green growth of herbs (chiefly grasses) just covers the bare ground. A few pears, appearing rotten, are still on the trees. Lower & Upper Mahinke Ranches, 4¾ mi S & 1 mi W respectively and 7 mi S & 1 mi W of Kelseyville, Lake Co., Calif. Relatively few in these areas despite apparent abundant berry food. Some were feeding on berries of Photinia arbustifolia, but there were no large flocks here. Max. about 60 in a flock.
