Apr. 16 (cont) Monterey to 8 mi. WSW Pt. Pinos
again at 12:00 noon.
Mrs. Dollo H. Beck
& Stanley Jewett sat together on a seat
just forward of the bridge and I talked
with them briefly. Both of them pointed
out that, positive identification of
Puffinus griseus versus P. tenuirostris
out of hand is risky, for the latter sp.
varies greatly in amount of pale gray on
underwing coverts - although averaging
darker than griseus, some individuals
might look like typical ones of that species.
I should think, then, that a bird with
definitely dark wing linings could be set
down as tenuirostris (since griseus
always is silvery on underwing) and the
very silvery ones as griseus, with only
intermediates questionable.
Birds recorded from the boat (and wharf)
were:
Common Loon - {1 in breed. plumage between 7 to 8 mi. out.
1 m winter plumage in harbor
1 " breeding " just out of harbor,
arctic Loon - few in bay; 100 est. seen at all dist.
ofshore, outside of bay, most of them
flying Northward in groups of 2 or 3.
Cared Grebe - about 5 in harbor (breeding plumage)
Black-footed Albatross - 5 to 8 seen well offshore,
including 1 on return trip which was less
then 2 mi. off Pt. Pinos.
Sooty Shearwater - 200 est., from mouth of bay
most as. at 3-5 mi. out; on out as far as
and present.
