Catoptrophorus semipalmatus
June 29. Pacific Grove, Monterey Co., Calif.
2 standing on rocks along shore of Monterey
Bay w. of Cabrillo Pt. at 5:40 p.m. what
were probably the same birds were seen
by Besie & Denis Cogswell at about 4:00 p.m.
in the same location. The plumage
was a mixture of breeding & winter
ones".
head - dark brown (apparently finely streaked)
neck & throat - lighter, streaks coarser
underparts - barred irregularly along
sides, center of breast & belly
with no evident bars.
back - grayish (apparently smooth)
upper wing coverts - brown (in folded wing)
flight feathers - black & white, as usual.
The birds were studied at a range of about
50 ft. with 9x binoculars; 1 bird opened a
wing briefly.
