Aquila chrysaetos
2
Feb. 22- 12 mi. SE of Livermore, Alameda Co., Calif.
a single eagle, in adult (golden-headed)
plumage was “playing” on the breeze
over the ridge E of Arroyo Mocho. He
would soar up to a considerable height,
fold his wings so that the tips were
in by the body & only the wrist area
extended laterally, and then plummet
downward several hundred feet
—only to swerve up again for a
repeat process. Sometimes he
flapped about 12-15 rapid strokes
toward the end of the up-glide.
The weather was threatening, with
dark clouds high over Mt. Hamilton to
the south, & those same cloud banks being
rift in several places over the area
here, probably creating excellent up-
drafts. This is the closest thing
to real play I have ever seen in a
hawk flying alone.
- approx. 8 mi. along hwy US-50, NNE of Livermore
2 eagles in adult plumage soaring low
over the hillsides, now showing green thru
the brown. These were within 1 mile of
each other, both obviously foraging.
Dec. 11- 4 mi. SE Gustine Merced Co., Calif.- an eagle
sailed & flapped @ low altitude over duck
